In addition to the Bahamas, many private islands in Central America are located in the Caribbean. Today I will introduce Water Caye, a huge private island in Belize.

Water Caye is located 11 miles southeast of Belize City, about a 20-minute boat ride. Not far from the Belize Barrier Reef (the second largest in the world), which is rich in Marine life, it is ideal for snorkeling, diving, fishing and boating excursions. At the same time, the proximity of it to deep water access makes it an ideal choice for a cruise ship pier and port of entry, and can even accommodate two Genesis Class vessels.

The Water Caye Resort includes a private beach of about 10 acres with about 1,000 feet sandy bay line, enough to accommodate about 1,000 cruise guests at a time. The island is home to the largest palapa structure in Belize, with a central bar with built-in seating and adjacent restroom facilities, showers and changing rooms; the other serves as a dining area with a kitchen.

The resort is currently in a dormant state but can be operational within a few days. The island can accommodate up to 18 guests in several buildings, including a lovely two-bedroom house, an overwater bungalow and the caretaker's cottage. Activities including paddle surfing, snorkeling, canoeing, beach volleyball and barbecuing can also be offered. A docking facility is available for berthing tender boats.

Existing infrastructure on the island includes a 20-kilowatt generators, a 60-foot windmill tower, a 20,000-gallon water storage tank, pipes, desalination equipment and a fresh water well that can serve guests as well as large buildings or developers. With just 10 acres under development and 540 acres still to be developed, the island is also attracting plenty of development plans. Existing proposals include three hotels, a marina, an airstrip, a golf course, a tennis club, a business village and a single family building plot where luxury homes could be built, among others.

However, the real value of the island lies in its large size and excellent location close to the English Cay Channel, due to its deep water access in Belize and the main shipping channel, allowing passage through Belize's Great Barrier Reef. The entrance to the channel is 2.8 miles southeast of the island, and the channel itself runs along the west coast of the island at a distance of just 2,800 feet. This provides the island with direct access to deep water and creates excellent conditions for the development of a cruise or yacht port or marina on the western side of the island.

About 44 % of the population in Belize are descendants of the Maya and Europeans, and it is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. Foreign investment is also highly encouraged by the local government, and foreigners can buy islands as an individual and legal entity. The government of Belize has offered a number of incentives to attract inward investment, such as exempting capital gains and inheritance taxes and allowing 100 per cent foreign ownership of land and corporate assets.
